Weekend: July 9-11, 2010

Every weekend, I will detail my activities and expenses to provide an example of how to implement a frugal mindset while still having a fun and active life.

Friday

I had plans to meet up with some friends for dinner on Friday night. I fixed myself a grilled cheese after work and snacked on some cashews on the way over. I did not purchase anything at the restaurant but still enjoyed myself. It was nice chatting with friends, some who I had not seen in a while. After dinner, we went to a local ice cream shoppe. I ate a delicious chocolate chip ice cream cone and socialized some more with friends.

Friday Total Cost:$3

Saturday

My friends were married on Saturday, so I spent most of the day getting ready for and attending to wedding things. They had an open bar so no money was spent!

Weekend: July 2-5, 2010

Every weekend, I will detail my activities and expenses to provide an example of how to implement a frugal mindset while still having a fun and active life.

Friday

Since this was a long weekend, I took advantage of the extra day by doing nothing on Friday. I made a small dinner and got caught up with bills and things. Not too exciting, but it had to get done.

Friday Total Cost:$0

Saturday

I spent Saturday at the shore with some friends. I packed a lunch, brought a drink and some snacks. We took a route without any tolls and less traffic. An hour later, we were relaxing on the beach. My friends ate lunch at a place on the boardwalk where a slice of pizza and a drink was $8. I sat at the table with them eating my yummy sandwich.

Later that night, I had plans to watch the UFC fight at Buffalo Wild Wings. I knew I would eat there, which is why I did not want to eat out earlier in the day. Unfortunately, BWW changed their boneless wings into disgusting fried crap so that was rather disappointing. The Blue Moon’s helped washed the ickiness down.

Saturday Total Cost:$20

5 Ways Netflix Will Save You Money

Netflix 101

Netflix
Netflix has a slew of subscription plans. Their bottom tier is $8.99/mo for 1-disc-at-a-time but unlimited discs throughout the month (this is what I use). This means that I can only have one Netflix DVD in my home at a time, however I can rent an unlimited amount of DVDs every month. The 2-discs-at-a-time plan is $13.99 and 3-discs is $16.99. With all of these plans, you can also stream Netflix Instant Watch movies & television shows without any extra charge; this is included in every unlimited plan.

Netflix DVDs have a 1 day turn-around. If I mail out my postage-paid DVD on Monday, the distribution center receives it on Tuesday and immediately sends out the next DVD in my queue, which I will receive on Wednesday. If you want to watch something in between those days, you can use Netflix Instant Watch.

Leslie’s Frugal Guide to Working Out

Leslie's First 5K

Ready for my guide to getting in shape for just pennies? Here we go:

1. Don’t buy anything
2. Take a walk outside; jog the last five minutes
3. Repeat tomorrow

How’s that for easy!

Okay, maybe I oversimplified. But, not really. You don’t need anything to start working out. You just need to go outside and do it! Continue reading »

Weekend: December 4-6, 2009

Every weekend, I will detail my activities and expenses to provide an example of how to implement a frugal mindset while still having a fun and active life.

Friday

After work, I had leftover spicy chicken and rice for dinner then watched more of that Everest show on Netflix. A friend last-minute invited me out to a local bar to see a band play. I debated going because I wasn’t too keen on spending $8 to see a band plus drinks but I decided that I would just have a beer beforehand and suck up the cover to hang out with some friends.

Well, I am definitely glad I went because we just hung out in the bar (cover-free) instead of paying to see a band. For drinks, my friend came back from the bar carrying two cokes and then proceeded to “mod” them under the table with supplies she brought in her purse. I had no objection! Someone else bought a pitcher of beer, so I had a glass of that. The night was a lot of fun! I met new people, stayed there until the bar closed at 2a and had a great time.

Weekend: November 20-22, 2009

Every weekend, I will detail my activities and expenses to provide an example of how to implement a frugal mindset while still having a fun and active life.

Friday

On Friday, I made myself a chicken quesadilla and just relaxed at home. I did some sewing and played more video games. Not too exciting, I know, but I worked late and just didn’t feel like going back out.

Weekend: November 13-15, 2009

Every weekend, I will detail my activities and expenses to provide an example of how to implement a frugal mindset while still having a fun and active life.

Friday

On Friday night I made myself a quick pasta meal using the marinara I made earlier in the week. I had it three times last week so I just froze the rest for later in the month. My friend let me borrow his PlayStation3 for a week so he can write a paper without distractions. So, Friday night around 7p, I made the mistake of starting the game Uncharted 2…. and that was my entire Friday night.

Ditch the routine and make things special again

I created this blog to provide examples of how a frugal lifestyle, can also be a fun one. The way I do this is by considering my “fun” stuff as a treat for me!

Spend Less, Spend Better

I don’t make many purchases during the week. The only money I’ll spend is for bills that are due. I don’t eat out for lunch or dinner and I don’t go shopping after work. Sound boring?

Well, by not spending $50/week on lunches, I can instead spend that money on something really fun over the weekend! I can go out … Continue reading »
