Recipe: Home-made spice mixes

There are three spice mixes that I like to always have on hand. I make all these ahead of time and store them in old spice containers (with the built-in shaker top). That way it is really convenient to use them when I want to make a good dinner but am crunched for time. Continue reading »

Frugality Does Not Have to be Boring!

  • A month ago I read this post on The Simple Dollar: 21 Ways to Reduce your Spending without Making Your Life Miserable. When I first read the reader’s question, my thoughts went in a totally different direction from Trent’s answer. This was partly the inspiration of this blog!

I believe it is possible to still be active and go out and have fun and drink and party and socialize and have friends and do cool things while still being frugal. Yes, I realize that “frugal” may have a negative connotation to some of us younger folks but there are ways to save money without getting out your coupon organizer! Continue reading »

Every weekend, I will detail my activities and expenses to provide an example of how to implement a frugal mindset while still having a fun and active life.

    Friday

I worked late on Friday so by the time I got home, I didn’t feel like going back out. I also had just received my new sewing machine so I was very excited to try it out. I made some dinner at home then played with the sewing machine until it was time to go to bed.

    Grocery Shopping for One

Who has time for weekly shopping trips?

I do one large grocery shopping trip and one small trip (milk, eggs, cheese, produce) in a month. My large shopping spree consists of ingredient-items and meat. I expect to spend about $100 on this trip. The smaller trip will cost around $20.

There are several reasons why this shopping technique works best for me and keeps my food spending in check: Continue reading »

Things I Don’t Do: Use Coupons

    The Appeal

Save money! If you’re going to be buying the item anyway, why not take a few minutes to clip out a coupon saving you $0.50. Unfortunately, many of the items that coupons are for, are not that good for you. Continue reading »

    DIY: Face Exfoliators

For a while, I was buying natural skin-care products because I didn’t like the idea of putting chemicals in my skin. Then, one day, I looked at the ingredients of these natural products. I really looked at the ingredient list, and realized that a lot of them consisted of food products that I have in the kitchen! The oatmeal-based mask, the sugar-based scrub; surely it couldn’t be too difficult to recreate these myself? Continue reading »

    Weekend: October 9-11, 2009

Every weekend, I will detail my activities and expenses to provide an example of how to implement a frugal mindset while still having a fun and active life.

    Friday

After work, I met up with a friend at the Skylark Diner. This is a wonderful restaurant that has delicious food and a cool ambiance. I ordered a turkey/avocado wrap. The food was just-okay but the conversation was wonderful. In hindsight, I wish we went to a cheaper place but I still consider the $11 (after tip) to be well spent. Continue reading »
